The Double Helix of Enterprise Creation

The Double Helix of Enterprise Creation

Why Skandere Was Built as Two

Skandere isn't a company that will conditionally give back one day when it feels it's made enough.

That's because I built the Skandere Foundation as a charitable arm alongside it.

They are siblings and counterweights. Two strands in the primordial DNA of Skandere's makeup.

Skandere LLC and Skandere Foundation are legally distinct organizations, with different responsibilities, different economic functions, and different ways of participating in the world.

But philosophically, they belong to the same organism.

One of them builds. One of them circulates.

One generates enterprise, intellectual property, services, experiences, and economic value.

The other creates public benefit, funds possibilities, supports human and planetary flourishing, and allows resources to move toward places where financial return cannot be the only measure of worth.

Their relationship illustrates something far more fascinating than any kind of corporate structure I’ve seen.

A double helix.

Two strands winding around the same central purpose, continuously influencing the direction of the whole.

This is not merely how Skandere is organized. It is a proposition about how things in this world should be built.

THE PROBLEM WITH THE APPENDAGE

There is a familiar and arduously tiresome architecture to modern enterprise...

You build a company. You find the customers. You increase the consumption. You grow the revenue. You capture a sizable market share. You accumulate capital.

And... if this enterprise becomes sufficiently successful, perhaps they establish a foundation, create a charitable initiative, pledge a percentage of profits, or begin giving something back.

The social good exists downstream from the economic machine. IF THEY'RE FEELING NICE.

First we determine how value will be captured... and only later do we decide how some of it might be returned…

There are extraordinary companies that have created enormous good through precisely this model. The problem is not philanthropy, though... It's the sequence.

The architecture of these plans precedes intention.

If an enterprise is designed from its beginning around extraction, accumulation, and perpetual consumption, charitable activity introduced later does not necessarily alter the underlying machine, does it…

The foundation becomes an appendage. It becomes a conditionally implemented activation...

The business continues operating according to one philosophy while its philanthropic arm attempts to compensate according to another... always being dragged forward like a sideshow attraction to showcase when it's convenient!

One extracts. The other repairs (often just the first's image).

One accumulates. The other redistributes (only within "reason").

And we call the combination responsibility. Oof.

Skandere is interested in a more difficult but potent reality:

The existence of the Foundation changes the behavior of the enterprise itself.

TWO STRANDS, ONE ORGANISM

This is where the relationship becomes symbiotic.

Skandere LLC creates economic engines.

It can build programs, experiences, media, intellectual property, consulting practices, enterprises, and other mechanisms capable of producing revenue.

It can experiment! It needs to...

Invest. Employ. Scale. Compete. Generate abundance. Play the great game of existential creation!

The Skandere Foundation exists under a different mandate...

It creates programs whose value does not need to be justified by their profitability. It supports ideas before markets validate them. It funds people, research, education, conservation, public resources, and other forms of human or planetary benefit because they are worthy of existing.

This critical relationship runs in both directions.

The enterprise helps create resources that make greater public-benefit work possible.

And the existence of the Foundation forces the enterprise to continually confront a deeper question:

What kind of economic behavior should be generating those resources in the first place?

That question changes what Skandere builds, doesn't it... what it sells... how it thinks about growth... what "success" means... where surplus can travel... the relationship between accumulation and circulation.

The Foundation is therefore not simply something Skandere LLC can eventually support.

The Foundation helps determine what Skandere LLC will become from day one...

And the LLC, through its capacity to generate economic energy, expands what the Foundation always intended on doing.

Each strand strengthens and disciplines the other.

Generation fueling regeneration.

Regeneration informing generation.

...Around and around we go!

THE ECONOMICS OF A LIVING SYSTEM

As you can see, there is a biological quality to this architecture.

Living systems do not survive through accumulation alone. They can't

Energy enters. Energy transforms. Energy circulates. Energy becomes structure, movement, repair, reproduction, adaptation, and new life.

Systems in which resources cease circulating eventually become unhealthy. The same may be true of our institutions.

An enterprise designed only to maximize how much value it can capture risks becoming economically successful while structurally entropic...

It consumes attention. Consumes labor. Consumes resources. Consumes desire. Consumes the world around it.

And measures its success primarily by how effectively that consumption produces accumulation.

Skandere seeks a different economic posture altogether.

It’s not anti-profit or anti-growth. It’s suspicious of wealth.

Quite the opposite! Generation requires energy.

Capital is energy. Enterprise is energy. Human ambition is energy. Technology is energy. Creativity is energy.

The question is not whether these forces should become powerful. The question is:

What happens to the world as they do?

A generative enterprise should become more capable of contributing as it becomes more capable of producing.

Its success should increase the possibility surrounding it. Its growth should create new growth. Its abundance should increase its capacity to generate abundance elsewhere.

That is the economic instinct Skandere is attempting to encode.

It can't be about consumption without consequence... or accumulation without circulation... or philanthropy as absolution.

It is Generation as architecture.

THE CREATION PRINCIPLE

This principle extends far beyond Skandere. It may be one of the most important truths within the entire Skandere philosophy:

What you want something to become must influence how you build it at the beginning.

We tend to imagine integrity as something demonstrated through individual decisions.

But integrity IS architectural.

A person can build habits that make certain behaviors more likely. A business can construct incentives that make certain decisions more likely. An institution can distribute power and resources in ways that make certain outcomes more likely. A civilization can design systems that either reward extraction or encourage regeneration.

By the time the ethical decision arrives, much of the decision may already have been made by the architecture surrounding it in the first place!

This is why creation deserves extraordinary attention.

The original design really matters. The incentives matter. The relationships matter. The direction in which resources are permitted to flow matters.

It all matters... If it all succeeds and the beautiful beast of creation matures, we'll see very simply that:

Scale magnifies architecture.

A structure designed around extraction becomes more extractive when scaled. Can't have it.

A structure designed around consumption becomes more consumptive when scaled. Can't do it.

A structure designed around generation becomes more capable of generating when scaled. YES.

This applies to a human life, too.

It applies to a company.

It applies to a community.

It applies to an institution.

It applies to Skandere...

That's why I'm building it out this way…

BUILD THE CONSEQUENCE INTO THE CAUSE

There is an assumption about our collective economic thinking:

Create wealth first and determine its purpose later...

Skandere rejects that separation wholeheartedly. Purpose should participate in the creation of wealth itself… And the consequence should be present inside the cause.

That is why the Foundation exists now! Not when Skandere is enormous. Not when there is an effortless surplus. Not when generosity becomes convenient.

Now.

If Skandere intends to participate in personal, social, and planetary progress, those responsibilities cannot simply appear in its messaging. Or when the conditional emotions are inviting...

They must appear in its anatomy. The LLC and Foundation therefore move together.

One creates enterprises capable of producing economic force. The other creates pathways through which force can become possibility.

The Foundation prevents enterprise from collapsing into acidic accumulation for accumulation's sake.

The enterprise prevents philanthropy from becoming dependent entirely upon resources generated somewhere else.

Neither exists to morally sanitize the other… They make one another more complete.

They are two strands, with very different functions, but with a shared code. And between them, something is birthed that neither could create alone:

an organism capable of generating human potential, economic value, social possibility, and real-world benefit without pretending those ambitions belong to separate galaxies.

That is the experiment of Skandere. That is the architecture of it all.

And perhaps that is the larger invitation hidden within Skandere:

Do not wait until you have built something powerful to ask what its power will serve.

Ask while you are building it.

Then build the answer into its bones.
